Message from your Mayor…….Mike Eason
Good morning, Dawsonville! As I write this letter to you, we have started to see more and more releases of restrictions regarding the coronavirus pandemic. As we all hope and pray, we hope we will not have a second round of activity as a result of the social interaction we are having as citizens of our great country. We all cherish our liberties and freedoms and we pray that this will pass and we could continue to live our lives as we are promised. A lot of things are happening here in the city. We’ve opened the playground at Main Street Park, which is in itself an adventure. Just walk around and see all of the opportunities for our children to enjoy themselves. Our hope is that each of you will take your kids or grandchildren to enjoy the park. We are having to currently use an alternative entrance due to the construction of the Main Street Park restrooms. We hope that they will soon be able to complete the sidewalks and allow us to open access to our special needs area for wheelchair use. The wheelchair swing was donated by our local Civitan Club here in Dawsonville and it is open. There are instructions posted of how to play a video (you will need a cell phone) that will show you how to use it and we encourage you to try it for individuals in wheelchairs.

The Farmers Market continues to operate every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and it has some great products, including locally grown produce, as well as meats and fish. Please join as we help our local farmers.

The City Council has resumed regular meetings in the council chambers with social distancing and we look forward to seeing anyone wishing to attend these meetings. City Hall still has some restrictions on activities and we hope to release these in early or mid-July. Remember, the Main Street Park walking areas and trails, as well as picnic tables, are still available for use by the community. I’ve seen many people riding bikes, walking their dogs, and walking on our mile plus trail system, right behind Food Lion. Many of our businesses are back operating on a regular basis and we encourage you to shop with our local merchants.

Please be safe if you have summer plans and enjoy what we can make out of this so unusual summer based on all of the restrictions. If you’re staying home, please remember to watch out for children as many of them are not taking summer vacations. I hope to resume Coffee with the Mayor in late summer.

A message from your City Manager…….Bob Bolz

To ensure our ISO rating for fire protection is maintained, hydrant testing is underway and should continue one or two days a week through July. This a required annual event and keeps our homeowner insurance rates down and maintains our ISO Rating at three (3). Please be patient with this process as it may cause some cloudy water. Staff will be working diligently to clear the lines as they go. If you experience any discolored water, you may need to flush your lines. This does not impact the drinkability of the water in any way. If you have questions, please call City Hall at 706-265-3256.

Our staff at the City of Dawsonville hopes you and yours are healthy. We continue steps to protect our customers and personnel while limiting the spread of the COVID-19 virus. City Hall is open and has been arranged for social distancing. We encourage customers to wear masks. We also encourage use of ACH online payments, pay by phone, or our convenient drop box at City Hall for water/sewer/garbage bills. Almost all city services can be done online. Water and sewer service, as well as public works, will continue normal operations with staggered staff schedules. As city council meetings resume, unless you need to attend, we encourage you to watch them via our live streaming efforts on FACEBOOK or the recorded version on our website. Staff can be reached via our website, email or by phone. Food Truck Friday scheduled for June 5th had to be cancelled, as well as our 4th of July Fireworks. We hope these can return next year. We will host our first Food Truck Friday July 10th at the all new Farmers Market pavilion. Please watch for event specifics.

Speaking of the Amicalola Regional Farmers Market, it has opened at their new home, the Dawsonville Farmers Market. They are practicing social distancing, asking vendors and customers to wear masks, offering no craft merchandise and only offering prepackaged products at various weights for set prices. The Farmers Market opens Saturdays at 8 A.M.
We have reopened the playground at Wallace Park after sanitizing equipment and installing hand sanitizer stations. We are excited to announce that the new playground at Main Street Park is open as well. It has been sanitized and hand sanitizer stations have been installed. However, at times, it may be closed for portions of the day based on construction on the adjacent new restroom. Construction of the sidewalk planned along Perimeter Road from Shoal Creek to the Rain Hill is almost complete as well as upgrades to our wastewater treatment plant and upgrades to our drinking water system. Paving is planned for Perimeter Road in July in a joint city-county partnership.

June Employee Spotlight: Steven McNeal, Public Works Foreman
Our May Employee Spotlight falls on Public Works Foreman, Steven McNeal.  He and his Public Works teammates are responsible for everything related to streets, sidewalks, parks, cemeteries, stormwater, care of our city buildings and facilities. This department manages over 12 miles of roadways, which includes keeping the roads safely open, clean and in good shape, even during the challenging winter months that bring snow and any other severe weather.  They maintain over 10 miles of sidewalk, take care of both cemeteries, the Farmers Market, Wallace Park and Main Street Park.  They also care for the City Hall building complex that includes the GA Racing Hall of Fame and City Hall.  They work with HOA's to install speed bumps,  speed limits, directional signs and other tasks needed to protect our residents.  Steven has been serving the City for almost two years.

A native of Dawson County, he is married to April and they have three children, Jesse, Aleah and Maverick.  He values time with his family.  They enjoy ATV trail riding together.  Steven also enjoys playing video games and riding dirt bikes.  Another pastime he enjoys is learning new things via YouTube.  A former Employee of the Month, we are proud of Steven and appreciate his dedication and commitment.
