City News for the Residents of Dawsonville— MARCH 2022
Message from your Mayor-Pro Tem John Walden …….
Spring is approaching and I think we are all probably ready for some nice, warm weather. Main Street Park has been busy with the community taking advantage of the playground, skate park and the pavilions. As more and more people are out and about, please use caution with citizens walking around the park and on the sidewalks. Spring Break will be April 1-8, so please use caution as more children will be out enjoying their break. Food Truck Fridays will begin on Friday, May 6th and I hope you will be able to join us for some of the events for food and fellowship.
In the near future, I will be holding another public forum for you to come and discuss your ideas and concerns. I will keep you posted when I have a confirmed date. I would love to hear from you about anything on your mind concerning the city.
With the economic hardships that we all have faced recently, I encourage you to support our local businesses. Each one of our downtown businesses offer different services, and I hope that you will stay local and help these businesses through these trying times.
If you have questions or concerns, I welcome your input. Please feel free to call or email me at the contact information below.
A message from your City Manager Bob Bolz …….
The City is pleased to announce a $3 million grant that was awarded from the Governor’s ARPA funds for the wastewater treatment plant. The $500,000.00 grant for the well was denied and we await word on grants for the airport and the museum. The construction is underway to create administrative offices for the Utility and Public Works Departments, with the plumbing installed and they are ready to pour the footings. Plans are being bid out for development of a well and upgraded water meters. Several potholes were filled this month as the weather allowed. Staff continue work with GMRC to develop a grant through ARC for funding to develop a downtown master plan.
Main Street Park continues to grow. Eagle Scout Candidate, Ian Bliss installed the new Lending Library for Children near the playground and it looks great. Staff continues to get cost estimates for shade for the park. Additionally, plans are underway for a basketball court, pickleball courts, expansion of the skate park area, a possible disc golf course, and stage options for the amphitheater. The Dawsonville History Museum aka the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame will be hosting a Classic Car Auction sponsored by the Greater Atlanta Auto Auction. The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 23rd, starting at 11:00 AM. They expect over 125 classic cars and 1,000 people in attendance. Mark your calendars, this should be a special event!
The Georgia State Patrol hopes to offer a recruitment event on Wednesday, May 11th. It would run from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, with troopers and recruiters available to talk about career with GSP. They will have a variety of cars and equipment on display at the Farmers Market pavilion and hope to land a helicopter on the grassy area in front of City Hall or the parking lot.
The Amicalola Regional Farmers Market will be offering their Saturday markets starting April 30th. These popular events will continue every Saturday through the fall. Mid-summer, they may offer the market on Wednesday evenings once the produce starts to come in. If you haven’t visited the Farmers Market, you are missing a treat. Some of the vendors will also be in attendance at our Food Truck Friday events, which begin on Friday, May 6th. Please check the schedule on the front of this newsletter for event dates. Hope to see you there.
